Mostly Monkeys is proud to be involved in the growing trend of retirement of primates formally used in research. Due to refinements used in laboratories today more animals don't need to be be euthanized and due to the high quality of care required by such agencies as the USDA and AALAC they are in good health and can enjoy many years retirement. Cecil, and cagemate Dallas, came to us from a laboratory in California. Even though they were much loved by the staff they where singlely housed due to their large size. They were used for research into brain function which may some day lead to prosthetic limbs for paralyzed patients. the USDA requires that all surgical procedures (head gear that allowed electrode placement) are done as to not compromise the animal's health, which facilitated these animals being able to be returned to a natural state for retirement. Cecil and Dallas were trained to play complex video games and their brain functions were mapped. Such training requires a strong bond between the researcher and the animal. Since arriving at the sanctuary in 2000 they have been placed in a large outdoor enclosure which was built with a donation from the laboratory. Cecil and Dallas have since been acclimated to being together and both enjoy basking in the warm California sun.
